PILATES CPD | YOGA CPD

Did you know that 21.9% of women and 6.7% of men aged 50 years or more are estimated to have osteoporosis in the UK[1] and it is estimated that one in two women and one in five men aged over 50 will have an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime in the UK[2]. This suggests that 1 in 5 women over 50 coming to your yoga or pilates classes may have Osteoporosis!

If you would like to understand what you can include in your classes to help reduce the risk of Osteoporosis, increase your confidence in working with students with Osteopenia or Osteoporosis, or if you would like to attend for your own personal interest, then this workshop is for you.

Although risk of Osteoporosis exponentially increases with age, I have had women in their 20s presenting with an Osteoporosis diagnosis. The good news is that lifestyle factors play a huge role in both the prevention and management of the condition and can serve to significantly reduce the risk of falls and fractures.

During this 3-hour workshop led by Harmonise Founder and yoga and pilates teacher trainer, Clare Francis, you will experience various techniques and learn about their associated benefits.

We will cover:

  • The key differences between Osteopenia and Osteoporosis and the various stages of bone health
  • What Osteoporosis is and how movement such as yoga and Pilates can be of benefit
  • Case history essentials: Asking the right questions to tailor your classes (and understanding the ‘why’)
  • A holistic approach to Osteoporosis and why movement plans should consider age, exercise history, posture, breath patterns and mindset and medical history in addition to an Osteoporosis diagnosis.
  • How to design classes to reduce Osteoporosis-related risk factors
  • The role of the nervous system and hormones within a movement setting
  • Exploring beyond weight-bearing, and why other solutions can help those with Osteopenia/Osteoporosis
  • Modifying and adapting Pilates / Yoga movements and sequences safely
  • How and why incorporating the relevant aspects of Yoga & Pilates into a class can bring even more benefit to this client group
  • How to offer options and layers for all levels, even in classes specifically for Osteoporosis (incuding when and why)
  • When and how to include Osteoporosis clients in general classes or when (and how) to refer them
  • Incorporating safe and effective chair modifications in classes for older adults over 70 (where risk is much higher)
  • Access to further resources and more in-depth training programs for those who wish to specialise in working with this important client group.

By the end of this highly practical workshop, you’ll not only have a solid understanding of how to work with Osteopenia and Osteoporosis clients but we will have spent time building your confidence applying this knowledge in 1:1 or group classes. You’ll leave with a practical toolkit, ready to adapt exercises safely for individuals at different stages of Osteoporosis.

Each student will receive a handout and take part in practical exercises / asana as well as cover theory lesson and discussion. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask any questions.

Get ready to elevate your teaching approach, knowing you can support this important client group effectively and with care.
