Additional Learning Needs (ALN) & Assessment Procedures (Active IQ)
Individual Learning Needs
Learners are requested to identify any individual or additional learning needs, medical conditions and/or injuries that may affect learning or the assessment process on the application form or directly to the tutor.
Your tutor and assessor will be able to advise you on the specific requirements of the course and related assessment. Where ‘additional learning needs’ have been identified, you may be entitled to extra time in theory assessments. This includes having English as a second language. Please discuss this with your tutor or assessor during course registration to ensure you are fully supported during the course and assessment. The course timetable will also clearly identify learner guidance and support time when your tutor and assessor will be available to answer specific queries or clarify areas that are unclear.
It is important that learners are aware that the course may involve a small amount of homework at the end of each day and will include homework in between each weekend. This may involve some written work or practice of practical teaching skills and exercise technique.
Assessment Methods
The methods of assessment you will encounter are:
- Formative Assessment: Ongoing throughout the course in order to provide feedback on what you have learnt and what you need to improve on.
- Continuous Assessment: Ongoing throughout the course to obtain a result which will count towards your overall assessment result.
- Summative Assessment: Final assessment in order to obtain a result which will count towards your overall assessment result.
You will need to complete the following assessments for successful completion of the L3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates mat work course. Deadlines for these are indicated on the assessment plan on pages 3-5 of your Learners Achievement Portfolio (LAP).
Theory Assessments
- 2 x 90-minute multiple-choice papers covering ‘Anatomy and Physiology for exercise and health’ and ‘Principles of exercise, fitness and health’.
- You will take 2 x 40 question papers and need to get 28 correct in order to pass (70%).
- These assessments are taken at home online, are timed and are open book. This means you can look things up during the assessment, however, it is timed at 90 minutes so you do need to have learnt the material.
- You can e-mail clare@harmonisetrainingacademy.com when you are ready to take the paper who will then give you access.
- Please note you can take a mock practice paper and you have 3 attempts to pass the official paper.
Worksheets
The following worksheets will be completed in your Learner Achievement Portfolio (LAP):
- Know how to support clients who take part in Physical activity
- Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
- Principles of Pilates matwork
- Client Interview
- Group profile
- Group class plan
- Programming Pilates matwork
These worksheets will be completed throughout the course and marked by your assessor via Google docs.
Pilates Practical Assessment
For the summative practical assessment:
- The learner is required to teach a minimum of 45 minutes of the planned group session to a group of apparently healthy participants (aged 18 or over).
- The learner will be moved on at certain points within the session.
- Assessment criteria will be clearly introduced and explained during the course.
- There will be a minimum of 5 participants in the class you will need to bring a guest with you on assessment day to take part in the practical assessments.
- We will explain more about this during the face-to-face training.
Following the assessment: The learner must complete a written self-evaluation and reflection form, and bring it with them to their feedback.
Should you be unsuccessful, you will have the opportunity to retake any part of the above assessments. Please note there will be an additional fee of £150 for re-sitting a practical assessment unless it can be arranged on the same day as another practical assessment, in which case a fee of £75 will be incurred.
In addition, throughout the duration of the course, we strongly recommend all learners:
- Attend a minimum of 20 Pilates classes – and record using the form in ‘handouts’ on the online platform
- Observe a minimum of 15 Pilates classes (taking notes; this can be done via online classes from the Harmonise studio)
- Complete a minimum of 20 practical practice lessons (with friends, family, or other course learners) – and record using the form in ‘handouts’ on the online platform
This will be part of your homework. It will complement the practical elements covered during
the course and increase your confidence and teaching skills as you prepare for success in
your assessments and in the industry.
